Serenity

 

The movie was extremely intense. I was exhausted afterwards. Still feel like I haven’t been able to process everything that happened. There’s just so much happening in this film that it takes a while to sort through it all.

The movie clocks in at about two hours, but it didn’t feel that long at all. In all honesty I felt it was too short, I wanted more. To me some pieces felt a bit fragmented, but I think that might be because the scene before was just sinking in before the next one began. It’s a roller coaster of a film, and I was on the edge of my seat most of the time, had I been alone I would have been talking to the screen, cheering and screaming.

There were however some things that bugged me. This is glossier than the show ever was. While ‘Firefly’ had kind of a brownish tint, the film is more metallic and blue. It’s a little thing, but it also makes kind of a weird transition. It maybe didn’t help that I just finished my ‘Firefly’ marathon a few hours before I saw the movie. So If anybody else is planning to watch the show first, do it the week before you see the film, to get a little distance between the two.

In short, I really loved the movie, but can understand the people that don’t like it. There’s a moment towards the end that caught me completely off guard, and it took me a long while to get over it. However that might be something that non-browncoats won’t react to, and other browncoats saw coming

I loved the cast of this movie, Joss Whedon knows what he’s doing when he chooses his casts, they all work really well together, and I just adore every single member of the Serenity crew.

Crash

I don’t really know what to think about this film. I had looked forward to seeing it, and it handles a subject I feel very strongly about, but I didn’t really feel anything watching this, well, almost. I felt for the lock-changing guy with the daughter, but that was about it.

Maybe it was because there were so many people to get to know, but I felt that we didn’t really get to know any of them, despite the movie running over the 2-hour mark.
I had expected more.

Green Street Hooligans

I was kind of expecting to hate the movie and/or be bored out of my mind. I don’t like football, and therefore I don’t really get the hooligan thing.

The movie begins with a fight, which looked pretty damn bad, in a ‘ouch, that has to hurt like hell’ way. Jumping right into the worst part of hooligans

In the end I really liked the film. I’m not going all gaga over it, but it’s definitely ending up in my DVD collection. I think what I loved the most about it was the fact that a woman made this film. She took a serious subject and brought it to a media that would make the public have a think about it.

It’s raw and that just helps it along, there’s a lot of use of the hand-held camera, which might annoy some people, but I think it really worked. It gave the film kind of a documentary feel, and made it look more ‘real’.

It’s a brutal film, and it shows some pretty disturbing human behaviour. I did however kind of ‘get’ the hooligan thing after I saw it though. It’s about being part of something, a group, knowing that they’ll watch your back. I still wouldn’t recommend anybody to join up though.

I do however recommend that you go see the film!

I think Elijah Wood did a great job as the outsider who’s welcomed in to this ‘new world’. There were also some good moments between him and Charlie Hunnam in the beginning where Charlie points out some English slang words and such, was a nice scene. Anyways, Elijah fit in, I never really thought much about it, and even though head-butting people isn’t what he usually does in his movies, he didn’t seem at all awkward during the fighting scenes. In fact, the moment when he decides to hit back is great! Just the look in his eye told me the other guy was going to be sorry.

Charlie Hunnam did a good job as well, I haven’t seen him in much, but this is the first hard ass I’ve seen him play. He’s torn between loyalty to his family and the hooligan gang, though he is first and foremost a hooligan.

All in all a good film.

Daredevil

Yes, this movie has plotholes and a short end-fight. But the characther of Matt Murdoc is likeable. He's been through so much shit in his life, and has all right to crawl into a corner and cry, but he doesn't, he makes the best of it and stands up for what he believes in.
It needs a little more meat in the beginning, and the relationship between Matt and Elektra just happens, and goes to intensity waaay to fast. Bullseye just seems to pop up here and there to go a bit ballistic, he needed a bit more to do. They could have given him a little more screentime maybe?
Despite what people say I liked Ben Affleck in the role as Daredevil. Ithink Jennifer Garner did okay too. All in all, I like the film.

The Punisher.

It struck me more as a B-movie than a block-buster, but I had fun with it.
I liked Thomas Jane as Frank Castle, and that he doesn't let his tragedy stop him. It does handle a subject I find interesting; does one man have the right to be judge and jury, even if the people he's killing off are are people that everybody knows are criminals?
"It's not revenge, it's punishment." Frank Castle is a rather brooding character, but it works for him, he's driven in his search for punishment, and he's actually able to help some people along the way.

Batman Begins

It's a really good film, but the beginning is a bit of a slow burn. The bit up in the mountains is important to the story, but I think they should have trimmed it a little bit. I eventually got sucked in to the whole thing, and I really enjoyed the film.

Fantastic 4

I was an okay movie, not fantastic, but innocent fun. I had fun with it and it might actually end up in my collection at some point. It had some of the same structual faults as Daredevil, but I liked the characters, and it's obvious that this film is just a buildup for the next movie.
The end fight was way to short. Actually on of the same things that bugged me about Daredevil.. Am wondering how it'll be in the next movie. I will go see the next movie. In short, much better than I'd expected, but not what I would be jumping up and down for.

Sin CIty

Just got back from my second viewing of Sin City.

I do love this movie, and I'll be buying it the second the 2-disk edition is released. Anyways, this movie is visually stunning. Kind of weird to say that about a mainly black'n white movie, but it's true. The few colours that pop up just add to the gritty feel of the movie, and help draw attention to the simple things we might have missed, like Dwight's shoes.
The stories are simple, and I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much if they were taken out of the CGI/black'n white/gritty setting, and each segment made in to a separate film. It's the style and the feel that this movie delivers that kept me in my seat and enjoying myself, that and the really cool characters.
First up is two short stories, one with Josh Hartnett, and the beginning of Bruce Willis' story. Don't think it lasts for more than 10-15 minutes in total, before the first main event. The Hard Good-Bye.

Constantine

I liked it, I must say. It's not the deepest movie I've ever seen, but I thought the visuals, style and such is really cool. I like the camera angles and use of color. Hell is really well made as well.
The role fit Keanu Reeves and his limited facial expressions well. The character, Constantine, is a dark and serious type, and that just worked very well for him. I really liked Rachel Weisz's character too, gave another view to the situation, a more emotional element to the film.
I know it's a far cry from the source material, but if you let the film stand on its own two feet it's pretty enjoyable.
